The Great Milk Scandal

Did you know that British farmers are being paid less for a litre of milk than it costs them to produce it?
Over the last year, 1,000 of our dairy farmers have gone out of business, yet the processors and supermarkets who sell the milk are making huge profits.

Someone's getting paid

Just four supermarkets, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's, control over 80% of our food supply.
In 2004 one supermarket made profits of £2,000,000,000.00 - that's £5.5 million per day. On the other hand farmers lost £565,000,000 - that's £1.5 million per day.
Their profits have increased substantially over the last decade while farmer's margins have falen so low they are losing, on average, 4p per litre on their milk.

In 1994 the retailer's margin was 0.37 pence litre at a retail milk price of 41p litre. In 2005 the retail margin was 15.5 pence per litre at a retail milk price of 50 pence per litre. Over 10 years the retailer's income has risen to over 4000%, while the farmers income has fallen 8%. Our dairy industry is being milked dry. We get paid the lowest price for our milk amongst the major producers in Europe.

Don't milk the farmers

It's a fact that you are paying more for water than milk. Water is great for quenching thirst, but milk is a great nutritious choice, containing protein, Vitamin A, B12, D and Calcium.

The Milk Protection Racket

Supermarkets use their buying power to bully suppliers. Farmers have no direct influence with supermarkets, and end up having to accept poverty prices for their milk, which allow dairy companies and the supermarkets to make fat profits. The Office of Fair Trading is supposed to monitor the 'big four' through the Supermarket Code of Practice, but refused to prevent them from misusing their power in 2005, despite being sent clear evidence of abuses of the Code by NFU.
